(Nairobi, Kenya) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced that Ethiopia is advancing a strategic plan to generate 2,400 megawatts of nuclear electricity within a 10-year timeframe, emphasizing national self-reliance and technological capacity expansion.

In a video address following an inspection of the newly established Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission and an industry exhibition, Prime Minister Abiy detailed plans to construct two nuclear reactors, each with a generation capacity of 1,200 megawatts.

The Prime Minister highlighted that nuclear technology provides foundational knowledge spanning 60 to 100 years across economic and social sectors. He noted that despite high initial capital requirements, nuclear facilities deliver continuous baseload generation unaffected by seasonal weather shifts, adding that the projected combined output of the two nuclear units will exceed the annual generation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Prime Minister Abiy outlined broader applications of nuclear technology, emphasizing its utility in advanced cancer care beyond standard diagnostic imaging, agricultural pathogen identification for food security, artificial intelligence applications, and high-level technical workforce development.

He acknowledged historical delays in national technology initiatives but affirmed progress, stating that expert evaluations initially assessed over 30 candidate locations, narrowing potential reactor sites to three. Final site selection and feasibility validation will proceed in collaboration with international atomic institutions prior to concluding formal execution agreements.

Providing updates on parallel national projects unveiled at Guba, the Prime Minister stated that the first phase of the new mega airport project is slated for completion within three to four months, while the initial phase of natural gas extraction has been inaugurated as second-phase operations commence. He added that preparatory work on fertilizer production facilities, pipeline development, housing strategies, and mortgage banking frameworks has progressed.

Concluding his address, Prime Minister Abiy emphasized Ethiopia’s demographic standing as Africa’s second most populous nation, rejecting poverty narrative labels and asserting that strategic national investments over the next 25 years will position the country as a regional economic leader.
