Amhara Regional Gov’t Says It Is Working On “Negotiation With Fano”

Toronto – The Amhara regional government this week stated that it is working on resolving the conflict in the region through peaceful negotiation.

Mengesha Fentaw, the region’s head of government communication office, told a Federal Ethiopian Press Enterprise that ” An effort is underway to resolve the conflict in the region through peaceful means.”

However, the regional government did not disclose details if there is any progress with “negotiation effort.”

The Fano forces have dismissed the claim. They have been consistently stating that there would be no peaceful negotiation. Asres Mare, one of the Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF), told Anchor Media that there is no ongoing negotiation and that “Fano does not accept any peaceful negotiation.”

One of the conditions for negotiation for Fano forces, as has been stated in the past, is a negotiation in the presence of international observers and only with the Federal government.

In the past, the government was dictating a condition for “peace” demanding the rebel forces lay down arms and  give in to its demands.

The Fanos interpret the government position as evidence that the government does not have a genuine interest in negotiation.

Another point of difference is that the Federal government has been pushing for negotiation between the Amhara regional government and Fano forces which the latter rejected.

For the fano forces, the condition for negotiation is the withdrawal of the Ethiopian Defense forces from the region.

The conflict started in August 2023 when the Federal government declared a state of emergency with the intention to disarm what it calls “extremists.”

The rebels on the other hand justify their armed struggle with a mission to reverse existential threat to the Amhara people.

Since Abiy Ahmed took power in 2018, the massacre of ethnic Amhara intensified especially in the Oromia region of Ethiopia where thousands of innocent civilians of ethnic Amhara origin were massacred.

The government has been linking the recurring and pervasive, in the region, incidents to Oromo Liberation Army.

Unlike the government plan to eliminate Fano forces within a few weeks, as stated when the operation started in August 2023, the latter emerged powerful and more armed out of the conflict.

War is still raging, and the region has been devastated by it in a number of ways. Apart from economic devastation and loss of thousands of civilian lives, this year alone more than 3.9  million students (according to what the government admitted) are out of school.

  1. Let’s all hope this attempt to bring a negotiated peace to the beleaguered noble people of Amhara region will bear fruit. Those young people deserve peace, stability and security so they can pursue happy life for them and their families. Violent means of struggle to resolve internal issue never brought and will never bring lasting solutions but all it will do is replace one despot with another and even meaner authoritarian goon.
