The Plight of the Amhara People: Systematic Persecution and Humanitarian Neglect

The Amhara people have played a pivotal role in Ethiopia’s history, contributing to the nation’s formation, cultural heritage, and defense against foreign invasions. However, for the past four decades, they have faced existential threats, particularly under the TPLF-led government. Since 2018, the crisis has reached unprecedented levels, with the Amhara community subjected to ethnic-based violence, displacement, and systemic marginalization.

The Amhara have been victims of mass killings, forced displacements, and human rights abuses, particularly in the Oromia and Benishangul-Gumuz regions. Reports indicate that ethnic-motivated conflicts have led to widespread atrocities, including dehumanization and sexual violence against Amhara civilians. Despite these realities, there has been limited international acknowledgment and response to their suffering.

In recent times, the Fano movement has emerged as a resistance force advocating for freedom, equality, and democracy. However, Fano fighters face both internal and external challenges, including a lack of recognition and support from international organizations. Aid agencies, which traditionally provide humanitarian assistance to conflict and disaster-affected communities, have shown little willingness to support people in Fano-controlled areas. This is mainly due to Western misconceptions and biases against the Amhara and Orthodox Christians. Furthermore, the Amhara people are seen as forcibly capturing Wolkayit and Raya—fertile lands that were once part of Amhara territory before the TPLF took power.

Additionally, the Ethiopian government has actively obstructed aid deliveries, blocking access to essential resources for displaced and famine-stricken populations in these regions. As a result, many continue to suffer, with children, mothers, and the elderly dying due to a lack of essential medical supplies, severe food shortages, and malnutrition in both conflict-affected and drought-stricken areas.

The ongoing crisis demands urgent attention from the international community. Humanitarian agencies must uphold impartiality and ensure that assistance reaches all those in need, regardless of political or territorial considerations. Moreover, there is an urgent need for unbiased documentation and accountability for the crimes committed against the Amhara people to prevent further atrocities and promote long-term peace and stability in Ethiopia.
