Toronto – Over 89 government forces were reportedly killed in Gojjam, Amhara region of Ethiopia, in the past few days. 48  others are wounded.

According to Ethiopian Media Services (EMS), the casualties are only from the  intense fighting in the East and West Gojjam zone between August 21 and August 23.

Government forces were reportedly attempting to capture Dima town – a move that Fano forces claimed to have exploited to their own military advantage. Fano forces have announced that there were sacrifices on their side too but the number of casualties are undisclosed.

Government attempt to launch an offensive came as Fano forces announced that restriction on the movement of vehicles they imposed about a week ago was lifted.

Yohannes Alemayehu, Deputy Public Relation Head of Gojjam Fano, spoke to EMS on the phone. He has confirmed the number of casualties.

EMS report also indicated that government forces did make attempts to capture Bichena town as well. It appears that Fano forces withdrew from this town.

In Felege Berhan – along Motta direction – an ambush attack was mounted against government forces – according to Fano.

There were similar fighting in Achefer , Sekela and Tilile – among other areas of Gojjam – according to the EMS report. In Achefer, commander of the 5th Division of the Defense force is killed, Fano claims. But his name is undisclosed.

Anchor Media, another Ethiopian News source based in the U.S. , on Saturday reported that there were similar fighting between government forces in many areas of Gondar.

The source spoke to Yohannes Nigussu, Public Relation head of Gondar Fano forces. He made claims that they have over 300 captured government soldiers.

Over 70 government forces were killed and more than 180 wounded following a week-long intense battle in many parts of the Gondar area  of Ethiopia, the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Much of the rural parts of Gondar are under Fano forces control.

Shoa and Wollo areas of Ethiopia have also witnessed continued fighting.  Government plans to inflict a decisive offensive on Fano forces are thwarted, according to sources. There are reports that General Tefera Mamo led the fighting in Shoa and that Fano forces have managed to repulse government forces attempting to control areas.

The Defense Force has not remarked about the latest claims by Fano forces. On Saturday, it announced on its social media page that  DShK guns and ammunition (4,238) were seized in North Wollo, Meket district, Debrezebit kebele. Fano did not remark on it.

As borkena reported earlier this week, the government has deployed a massive force in the region in the past few weeks with a mission to decisively defeat fano forces.

The Fano forces have extensive grassroot support in the region which made it nearly impossible for government forces to make meaningful military gains.

The government initially launched the military campaign in the Amhara region with a stated objective to complete it within a few weeks. As it turns out, it is more than a year now and Fano forces continue to grow in number.
