Amhara Fano Movement Accuses Government Forces of Civilian Strikes Across Regional States

AFNM alleges widespread drone strikes and artillery bombardments across Oromia and Amhara, displacing tens of thousands

By Staff Writer

(Nairobi, Kenya) — The Amhara Fano National Movement (AFNM) has issued an official statement accusing government forces of executing widespread massacres, drone strikes, and heavy artillery bombardments targeting civilians across the Oromia and Amhara regions, including Wollega, Shewa, Gondar, and Gojjam.

According to the movement’s detailed release, military operations in East Wollega Zone’s Gida Ayana Woreda resulted in the destruction of multiple localities—including Fendeka, Andode, Village 3, Village 22, Chibchib Giorgis, and Melekta—leaving more than 65,000 surviving residents displaced in nearby forests. In Kiramu Woreda’s Wedesa Dima Kebele, targeted attacks led to the displacement of local residents, including a 76-year-old elder.

The statement detailed specific air and ground attacks in South Gondar, reporting an October 20, 2026, drone strike at Sana 1st Primary School in Dera Woreda that killed more than 15 students on the premises and severely injured a 60-year-old school guard, Eshete Kebede. Additional strikes in Andabet Woreda’s Welesh town damaged municipal administration offices and local shops. In East Gojjam’s Baso Liben Woreda, an October 21 drone strike on a commercial venue in Shay Bet killed civilians named Agumas, Abene, Yidnek Mengistu, Kume Amera, and Kebede Menberu, while injuring several others.

In South Wollo Zone’s Sayint Denssa Woreda, an October 20 drone attack resulted in the deaths of bank security guards Endalem Getachew and Deres Mengistu, recent 12th-grade graduate Kalkidan Fiseha, and high school student Weynshet Lantenew, alongside more than ten additional injured residents. Further airstrikes and heavy artillery shelling using BM launchers, mortars, and Zu-23 anti-aircraft guns were reported on October 21 in Bulga district, Shewa State, killing four people—including a 3-year-old child named Mitita—and in Awi Zone’s Fagta Dimma.

In its concluding message, the AFNM characterized the offensive as an existential campaign against the Amhara people. The movement called on the international community, the United Nations, the European Union, and human rights organizations to conduct an independent investigation into drone strikes against civilians. It further appealed to relief agencies for emergency humanitarian aid to displaced communities and urged all Ethiopians to unite in removing the ruling administration.
