Hawassa, July 22, 2026 – U.S. Ambassador Ervin J. Massinga opened a new American Space at Hawassa University on Tuesday to connect Sidama Region with resources to learn about the United States and build mutual understanding.  American Space Hawassa is the seventh American Space in Ethiopia, and the first in the south of the country. Sidama Region Vice President Beyene Berasa, Hawassa City Deputy Mayor Agena Neto, and Hawassa University President Dr. Chirotaw Ayele joined Ambassador Massinga at the ribbon cutting ceremony to inaugurate the space.

Separately, Ambassador Massinga met with Sidama Region President Desta  Ledamo and Deputy Mayor Agena for a wide-ranging discussion on the recent federal elections, Ethiopia’s national dialogue process, and the economic opportunities brought about by sustained peace. He also met with the Sidama Region Political Parties Joint Council for an open exchange on building inclusive political participation.

American Space Hawassa affirms Sidama’s important role as an economic and commercial hub by linking the public with U.S.-made technologies, skills building courses, English language resources, and more.

“This space is free to visit and open to all,” said Ambassador Massinga.  “American Corners are a space for learning, dialogue, and above all, the free exchange of ideas. Here, we offer the fruits of American leadership in innovation and showcase U.S. technology, which remains the gold standard worldwide.”

At the American Space, Ambassador Massinga met with participants of U.S. Embassy exchange programs, including the English Access Scholarship Program.  Their discussion covered how skills learned during their programs have helped them grow as students and be more competitive in the workforce. Hawassa is home to 127 exchange program alumni working across academia, media, government, agriculture, and public health. The Hawassa chapter of the U.S. Embassy Exchange Alumni Association was established in January 2025.

American Space Hawass is a partnership between the U.S. Embassy and Hawassa University. Located on the College of Agriculture campus, members of the public are welcome to visit Monday through Saturday to use computers, practice 3D printing, prepare for U.S. college examinations, and attend scheduled programs.

The Ambassador wrapped up his visit to Hawassa at the city’s industrial park, a symbol of the region’s economic ambition and vitality. Ethiopia’s leading integrated manufacturing hub and a major destination for U.S. investment, the 140- hectare park hosts international firms employing over 22,000 workers.
