Toronto – The Fano rebels operating in the Amhara region of Ethiopia have been justifying their armed struggle as one that is intended to reverse existential threat against Amhara.
What led them to believe that there was an “existential threat” against Amhara was primarily the recurring pattern of orchestrated massacre against ethnic Amhara in the Oromia, Benishangul and even parts of the Amhara region since Abiy Ahmed took office in April 2018.
A piece of evidence from a political figure who served as state minister for peace, Taye Dendea, currently arrested seems to support the claim that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has allegedly plans to “eliminate Amhara.”
Speculating his arrest, Taye gave interviews to Anchor media and Horn Conversation before he was put behind bar. To give a bit of background here, Taye Dendea not only served as state minister at the Federal level of government but also one of the key figures of ethnic Oromo politicians serving from within the government structure with reliable access for information from the Federal government and Oromia regional state. During the nation wide protest and ruling party internal turmoil in 2017, he was one of the key players as part of what was then Oromo People’s Democratic Organization which later rebranded itself as Oromo Democratic Party months before crafting Prosperity Party under the leadership of Abiy Ahmed who is also an ethnic Oromo Nationalist.
For the reasons cited above, many Ethiopian activists and followers of Ethiopian politics who are expressing their views on social media give weight to the information that Taye leaked.
In a clip of an interview with Horn Conversation which has become viral on social media, Taye is seen uttering “Secondly he [Abiy] told me ‘I am going to eliminate those people’ calling a political name” Taye apparently used “those people” so as not to mention a name. He then changed his mind and gave specifics. “May be we do not know what happens [to him] he told me ‘I am going to eliminate Amhara'”
Taye explained why he decided to disclose the information. He seems to think that he might not come out alive and he did not want what the prime minister told him to remain a “secret,” as he put it.
The revelation has alarmed many on social media and beyond. It continues to dominate conversation on social media.
Why Abiy has a goal to “eliminate Amhara” is unknown. Given the pattern of orchestrated mass massacre of ethnic Amhara in Oromia and Benishangul Gumuz region over the past six years (in fact there was a fresh massacre this week in Wollega) and the massive drone strikes targeting civilians in the Amhara region in connection with the war against Fano forces over the past two years which is recorded by human rights organizations, many could find it hard to dismiss what Taye Dendea has revealed.
At the time of this writing, the Office of the Prime Minister did not bother to respond to the story. Notably, when the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed held a meeting with business people from across the country last week, he made allegations that 60 percent of businesses in the country finance rebel groups in the country. And this week, he got a legislation passed in the parliament legalizing torture for secret services investigating “terrorism and money laundering.”

The EPRDF politics dealing with the Amhara issue and challenges has been better because it was peaceful and systematic. Abiy Ahmed`s choice of direct force is failing and costing his Oromo dominated army and threatening Oromia which is the gift of Tigray to the Oromo people. Battle hardened and armed Amhara (Fano) forces have overthrowing Abiy Ahmed and their main goal. He should not expect any military assistance from the regional power Tigray.
