Toronto – The Afar region of Ethiopia says controlling the wildfire it has been fighting for since yesterday has now become beyond its capacity.

It was discovered on Wednesday around 12:20 P.M. local time.

Kilbet Rasu zone of the Berhale district has been battling a serious wildfire until 11 p.m. local time. Despite efforts to control it, it is still not under control.

Worse,  fire incident is also being reported in other parts of the district. Halegubi and Afadona Ali areas are experiencing what appears to be monstrous wildfire.

No casualty has been reported so far.

However, putting out the fire has become “difficult”, in the words of the administration. The forest coverage in the area, which is reserved and protected forest, has contributed to the challenge.

The effort from the region appears to be mostly labor-intensive.  No reports so far that firefighter helicopters and aircraft are deployed.

The region has desert climatic conditions throughout the year and is mountainous. The effort is focused on containing the fire from spreading.

The region’s president has not released a statement regarding the situation. It is also unclear if the federal government has decided to respond to the situation.

Notably, there has been recurring volcanic eruptions in the region in recent years .

  1. With a strong El-Nino forecasted the old country is one of the countries that will be impacted by extended very high daily temperatures and dry weather. It means localized firestorms like this will be more in the news. Serious drought will affect millions. Let’s hope and pray that will not be the case. Luckily this one is in an inhabited terrain. I call upon everyone to give our Afar brothers and sisters a helping hand and douse this raging fire.
