NAIROBI, Kenya – Federal monetary transfer to the region was among the issues Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed talked about at the Ethiopian parliament today. He said that regions need to stop relying on money from the federal government and start making their own income.
“This year’s budget should be as efficient as possible,” he stated. The reason, he said “We can’t act like we’ve done everything just because we say we’re okay; we’re still at the start, and we have a long way to go.”
The Prime Minister said regions should begin earning their own money instead of depending on the federal government.
He used Addis Ababa as an example. He explained that before the reform, Addis Ababa made very little money, but this year it has made between 335 and 340 billion birr.
He said this is money that even the Ethiopian government could not collect before the reform. He stressed the need to improve income in all regions and support development.
He also said that no progress can happen without dedication, hard work, and discipline, and that all resources must be used properly.
He added that private companies should think of themselves as developers, not just traders, and should focus on making high-quality products for future generations.
He also said it’s important to make sure and check that the money sent to regions is used for what it was meant for.
