Toronto – 15 civilians were reportedly killed in Gamo and Gardula zones of South Ethiopia region last Sunday.
A security crisis broke out in the region after the Ethiopian Defense Force withdrew from the area – for redeployment to the Eritrea/Ethiopia border and the Amhara region, according to sources.
A government official in the area has reportedly confirmed, on condition of anonymity, the reported security incident. However, they claimed there were no casualties.
A resident from the Arba Minch Zuria area said that the incident impacted areas inhabited by Zeyse ethnic communities. Gunshots were reportedly heard on Sunday. These ethnic communities resent that they are included in Gamo zone and are pursuing a special administrative district.
There had been similar conflicts in the past over demands for a new administrative region for the ethnic community. The Defense Force was deployed to the area due to recurring security incidents.
Ambaminch- Gidole-Konso road was closed on Monday due to renewed conflict in the region, according to sources from the area.
Anti-riot and Arba Minch police forces were reportedly deployed to the area.
The Gardula zone of South Ethiopia also experienced conflict on Sunday. Three kebeles in Derashe district of the zone were particularly affected by the security incident.
Abraham Amoshe, a member of Ethiopian Parliament who is representing people from the area, is cited as saying that 15 civilians were killed as a result of the latest conflict in the Gardula and Arba Minch Zuria incident.
The killings are linked to Security forces who reportedly opened fire in the districts in Gardula and Zeyse communities.
