Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — Ethio Telecom announced today that it has held a high-level strategic dialogue with Shinqe Bank, a subsidiary of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), aimed at expanding access to digital financial services across the country.
The discussion involved top executives from both institutions, including Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru and Shinqe Bank President Neway Megersa. The meeting focused on exploring ways to improve inclusivity and accessibility through innovative financial technologies that can help transform the country’s digital economy.
“By working together with financial institutions like Shinqe Bank, we aim to ensure that digital financial services are accessible to all citizens, creating inclusive economic benefits and contributing to the country’s sustainable development,” said Frehiwot Tamru.
She also noted that the partnership would enable both organizations to introduce impactful, community-focused digital financial solutions that accelerate Ethiopia’s journey toward a fully digital economy.
Echoing her remarks, Neway Megersa, President of Shinqe Bank, highlighted the urgency of digital transformation in the banking sector:
“We are in the midst of a rapid digital transformation. Partnering with Ethio Telecom will allow us to fast-track this journey, expanding access and delivering value to our customers at a national level.”
Ethio Telecom has been pushing forward an aggressive digital strategy in recent years, particularly in the digital finance space. The company’s flagship service, telebirr, has already garnered millions of users, offering mobile money services across urban and rural Ethiopia.
Both institutions reiterated their commitment to work collaboratively on launching new digital finance solutions that will benefit citizens, boost financial inclusion, and further modernize Ethiopia’s financial ecosystem.
