Toronto – Eritrea and Ethiopia have been trading accusations for several months now. While Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of stirring conflict in the region by supporting a TPLF force under the leadership of Debretsion Gebremicael, the latter sees it as a false accusation.
In his latest two hours long interview with the state-owned television, Eri-TV, the Eritrean President made a reference to Ethiopia’s ruling party diplomatic campaign to paint Eritrea as an aggressor. Eritrea’s Ministry of Information shared highlights English translation of the interview on its official site. Eritrean President is cited as saying ” the recent letter that the government sent to the UN Secretary General falsely accusing Eritrea of stoking conflict was astounding and infantile.”
Moreover, Eritrea sees the reported accusation as “a cheap lie by the Prosperity Party to cover-up its war preparations.” The Eritrean president also said that Ethiopia is experiencing unprecedented turmoil, apparently especially in the post-Pretoria Agreement period and questions “why is the Prosperity Party agitating for war against Eritrea instead of focusing on, and addressing its, domestic problems?”
Regarding Eritrea, he painted a country that was striving to achieve regional stability and the vision is still “to foster good and solid ties of bilateral cooperation.” The president also stated that Eritrea’s core agenda is regional stability, and that there is “no appetite for war.”
He said, as cited by Eritrea’s Ministry of Information, “We have no appetite for war. But we have fought imposed wars. We have no territorial claims or ambitions against our neighbors. But as history attests, we know how to defend our country when and if attacked.”
Eritrea also expressed desire for what it calls a “functional” regional integration and cooperation while criticizing previous efforts via platforms like IGAD.
On the issue of “access to the sea,” Eritrea, clearly, sees it as the agenda of the United Arab Emirates, not the agenda of the ruling Prosperity Party. Apart from insinuating that Abiy Ahmed’s Party is serving the UAE, the president explicitly stated “In reality, these are not the PP’s agendas, but the fantasy of the UAE President who wants to create a constellation of ports under his control all over the region.” Abiy Ahmed’s Administration relation with UAE has been a point of criticism even in the opposition quarter in Ethiopia. There is a tendency to see it as one that is based on the relationship of the two leaders rather than the long term interest of Ethiopia and based on the principle of national interest.

It looks Al-Toweel Isu is itching for a start of gun fire so he can send his clunky Mig-29’s and bomb the GERD dam, He will then rush to Al-Qahirah to tell his longtime benefactor masters saying ‘I had done it for you. Give me some biscuits’. Why not? He has OLF/OLA, Fano, ONLF and some others whose name hard to pronounce rag tags on his side serving him as tour guides. Then these bigots and connivers scavenging now in Minnesota, LA, Tennessee, Michigan, Toronto, Oslo and Down Under will be flooding his palace to thank him for what he’s done for them by blowing up the dam. Just like what he had said umpteen times telling all of us and the world that Ethiopia is a country created out of fiction and it is a distorted never existed as a ‘state’ inhabited by distorted people. Then he will be busy carving it up into irreparable fragments with the juicy lion’s share part going to himself carried by his long time devout beasts of burden Debre and his untiring rag tags. That is exactly what he will do if he ever has his ways. Mark my word for it.

A fitting epitaph for Isaias?: “He wasted his life and the lives of millions peddling fear and instigating wars.”
