Asmara rejects international de-escalation appeals and accuses Addis Ababa’s ruling party of compromising Eritrean sovereignty

By Staff Writer
(Nairobi, Kenya) — Rhetoric between Addis Ababa and Asmara has intensified following an official statement issued by Eritrea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accusing Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party of fabricating military allegations to compromise Eritrean sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The statement follows televised remarks delivered in Tigrinya by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who accused the Eritrean government of acting as an instrument for foreign adversaries and warned that ignoring Ethiopian peace efforts would carry severe risks. Responding directly to these assertions, Asmara maintained that its position remains grounded in principle, arguing that Ethiopia’s pursuit of sea access under the premise of strategic necessity violates international norms and threatens established sovereign boundaries across the African continent.
Eritrea’s Foreign Ministry positioned the ruling Prosperity Party as the principal catalyst behind ongoing instability across the Horn of Africa, alleging that Addis Ababa has engaged in long-term military preparations, diplomatic campaigns, and economic interventions targeting neighboring territories.
Furthermore, Asmara rejected recent joint appeals for mutual de-escalation issued by international entities, including the United Nations, the African Union, the United States, and Great Britain. Characterizing generalized calls for “both parties” to exercise caution as legally deficient and diplomatically destabilizing, the ministry maintained that such statements overlook the root causes of regional tension.
Reiterating that Eritrean defense forces remain stationed strictly within legally recognized national borders, Asmara dismissed claims that its troops have crossed into Ethiopian territory. Affirming that Eritrea’s national sovereignty and territorial independence are non-negotiable and indivisible, the Foreign Ministry concluded that Asmara holds no interest in participating in manufactured geopolitical conflicts or regional instability.
