Toronto – Eritrea and the United States reportedly held talks last Thursday. It was held at the Eritrean Embassy in Washington, according to sources.
Senior U.S. State Department officials who were involved in the talks included Deputy Assistant Secretary Vincent Spera, Ms. Holly Mackey and Mr. Jonathan. Berhane Solomon, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Eritrea in the United States, received them and held talks.
The meeting is described as “candid and constructive discussion focused on both regional and bilateral matters.” Eritrea has been under U.S sections for a long time. The latest one was in 2021 in connection with the war in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. In 2021, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned Eritrean military officials and ruling party officials.
The U.S initiative to hold talks with Eritrean diplomats seems to signal relations are improving. In fact, an Eritrean news source reported that the meeting explored “ways to improve engagement through mutual respect and a shared interest in advancing regional peace and understanding.”
Eritrea has expressed “readiness” for cooperation and constructive dialogue with the United States, according to Tesfa News.
The Eritrean diplomat seems to have raised issues of sovereignty of his country. TesfaNews, one of the Eritrean News sources, reported “Mr. Berhane stressed the importance of upholding the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity and reaffirmed Eritrea’s commitment to regional peace, cooperation, and stability.”
Horn of Africa Africa developments, peace and security issues in the region are discussed. “Tsemdo”, The new alliance between Eritrea and the Debretsion led faction of the TPLF, was also part of the conversation.
Escalating tensions have been observed across initially between Ethiopia and Somalia, and since the past two years between Eritrea and Ethiopia.
Eritrea has been involved in forming alliances in the Horn of Africa with Egypt and Somalia at a time when tension was heightened between Ethiopia and Somalia. The tension was resolved following Turkey’s Ankara Declaration which was signed in December 2024.
Ethiopia’s tension with Eritrea has been worsening to the point that speculations for a conflict with a wider implication have been circulating for several months now. There is credible information that both sides are engaged in preparations for war. Trading accusations have been recurring over the past few months. Ethiopian Prime Minister, however, this week dismissed when he appeared at the Ethiopian parliament that Ethiopia will not “fire the first bullet.”
The United States expressed, for a long time now, concern over growing tension in the region. At the time of this writing, the State Department has not released a statement regarding the meeting with the Eritrean Embassy.

I see this news to be interesting and good in a way. Let’s all hope that such engagement will continue leading to bringing every country of the Horn of Africa into a fold led by Good Ole USA. Mouths mumbling with ‘Uni-Polar this and that’ should stop flopping.
