Addis Ababa – The Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) has issued a strongly worded statement demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners and what it refers to as “prisoners of conscience,” accusing the Prosperity Party-led government of systemic repression and rights violations.

In the press release shared with Borkena, EPRP denounced the continued imprisonment of opposition politicians, journalists, human rights defenders, and community organizers, citing widespread mistreatment and unlawful detentions without due process.

Among those highlighted by name are Christian Tadele, a sitting member of the House of People’s Representatives, who the party claims was imprisoned without the removal of his parliamentary immunity, as well as Yohannes Buayalew (Amhara Regional Council), Dr. Kassa Teshager (Addis Ababa City Council), and Yohannes Tesema (Boro Democratic Party). According to EPRP, these individuals “remain in prison and are being mistreated.”

“The government arrests people on fabricated charges and prolongs their detention by orchestrating endless court delays,” the party said. It also accused authorities of confiscating personal electronics from detainees under the pretext of investigations, calling it “robbery in plain language.”

EPRP condemned what it described as an authoritarian crackdown targeting individuals based on “ethnicity, political views, and beliefs” and called on the government to “fulfill its responsibilities or be held accountable today and in the future.”

The party also criticized the “Ethiopia is in Consultation” run by the Ethiopian National Dialogue  Commission (ENDC), claiming the initiative lacks transparency and is being used to distract the public from ongoing conflicts and political suppression. “Could it be that the Prosperity Party, after speaking with its assembled members and supporters, will tell us that they have ‘gathered ideas from the public’?” the party asked.

EPRP argued that the commission should have first called for an end to violence and the release of political detainees to create the conditions for real national dialogue. “Instead of seeking political solutions through negotiation, the ruling party is striving to subdue everything by force,” the statement said, calling the commission “a distraction and anesthetic for the warmongering ruling power.”

The statement expressed alarm over the ongoing conflicts in Amhara and Oromia regions, where fighting between government forces and armed groups has resulted in loss of life and destruction. “Ethiopia is perishing in wars started and continued by its own government,” the party declared.

EPRP also accused the government of mismanaging the economy, citing a weakened birr, skyrocketing cost of living, and damaging international agreements allegedly made to finance its war efforts.

“The change promised under Prosperity has evaporated like mist. The democratic space has shrunk more than ever before,” the party said. It warned that peaceful demands for reform are met with repression, pushing citizens toward desperation and, in some cases, armed resistance.

According to EPRP, the path to lasting peace and democratic progress lies in respecting human rights, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring that citizens can live and work freely without fear. “We believe that all Ethiopians must resolutely fight for this to become a reality,” the party said.

The statement concluded with a renewed call for unity among Ethiopians both at home and abroad, urging the diaspora to “intensify efforts to expose abuses to international human rights bodies.”

EPRP reaffirmed its solidarity with all individuals it described as “unjustly imprisoned” and condemned the Prosperity Party for “placing the entire nation in grave danger through its actions.”
