Toronto – Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP), one of the major political parties operating in Ethiopia, on Saturday criticized the government over putting pressure in the democratic space in the country targeting strong political parties.

“The effort the Prosperity government is making to close doors to peaceful struggle is clearly seen in recent internal and external pressures on strong parties including EPRP,” The party said in a brief update it shared on its official social media page.

The party vows that the government measure will not work.  Furthermore, it said, “…EPRP continues to be a voice for the people enduring all the high level internal and external pressures.

EPRP is undertaking a general party congress in July  this year. It seeks to achieve that the party ” emerge stronger and continue to be the true voices of the people.”

It called on party members and supporters in the country and abroad to stand with EPRP and support the peaceful struggle it is making which it sees as a historical responsibility.

There have been accusations from other opposition parties as well that Abiy Ahmed’s government is intensifying harassing opposition party members ahead of the the 7th general election in the country.

  1. I’m not surprised by the ruling party’s pressure on groups in the opposition when it sees them gaining strength. That is natural in Africa since the 1960’s except South Africa. Some of them sometimes show hints of tolerance but would start raising the jack hammer when the opposition shows up at or close the door. That is when those holding the ruling baton are civilians. But you wouldn’t even think about that or even making the faintest noise if the rulers are military hooligans like Mengistu, Nasser, Muammar Gaddafi, Idi Amin and others like them. In the old country, the sitting party had made it very clear from the very beginning that everybody should and will be synchronized. Even a book was written about it. In the midst of any unwanted pressure from the ruling party, the trick is for the opposition groups not to lose hope and confidence in the peaceful form of struggle. No one in the opposition has a history of choosing the violent form of struggle and live with its deadly and destructive consequences like this group.

    Peace y’all!!!
