Djibouti, Somalia Presidents in Ethiopia

Djibouti _ Somalia

Borkena

Addis Ababa –  Djibouti President,  Ismail Omar Guelleh, and Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Mohamed on Saturday arrived in Ethiopia.

They directly flew to Jigjiga, capital of the Somali regional state. It was Abiy Ahmed who greeted them on arrival at Jigjiga Airport.

“Welcome to #Ethiopia, my Horn of Africa brothers!,” Abiy Ahmed wrote on his social media page.

Inauguration of two projects in the Somali region of Ethiopia are the stated reasons why the two leaders are in the country. However, there are speculations that their presence is more than the inauguration of the projects.

They attended the official inauguration of Shebelle Resort, a federally funded resort project in the region, and Aysha-II Wind Power Project, a renewable energy project with a capacity to generate 467 GW power.

Notably, Abiy Ahmed led a delegation to Djibouti earlier this month after Egypt reportedly signed a deal to develop a port facility which is widely understood as a move to put Ethiopia on a choke hold by controlling its main outlet for export and import trade.

Somalia had signed a military cooperation agreement with Egypt in August 2024 to retaliate Ethiopia’s Memorandum of Understanding with Somaliland, which was signed on January 1, 2024.  The tension between the two countries eased after Turkish mediation which led to the Ankara Declaration.

The office of the prime minister has not disclosed if Abiy Ahmed held a meeting with the two presidents following the inauguration.

  1. This is something to be very pleased about. All these three countries are and have been irreversibly interconnected in all aspects of ethnic and cultural similarities that if one tries to harm the other, it will be a self-inflicted suicide. Ethiopia needs Djibouti’s ports and Djibouti needs potable water and the dirt cheap electricity from Ethiopia. Somalia’s survival in predicated on the undisturbed flow of sustaining water from Wabi Shabale, Genale and other mighty rivers that originate inside Ethiopia. Ethiopia needs a terrorist free and stable Somalia to ward off religious extremism so it can concentrate on other priorities. And, this is an important point, none of these leaders are hauled up in their Mussolini’s relic palace and lecture us about ‘uni-polar’ this and ‘multi-polar’ that trying to be a reincarnated Mao Zedong. None of these three are seen so desperate to be the Superpower of the entire Africa and the Middle East on panhandled F16’s and SU-35’s. So such togetherness is a win-win for all of them. Please note that I have chosen not to say anything about my darling Somaliland this time around. I’m sure Brother President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Mohamed understands me on that.
