Toronto – Djibouti, Ethiopia and Somalia on Wednesday had a tripartite “interviews,” as the news release from the office of the Djibouti president described it.

It was also framed as “consultation and understating of common challenges to the region.” It took place in an informal setting in the private residence of Djibouti’s president in Haramous.

The setting was an Iftar dinner. A picture shared on a social media page of Djibouti’s President shows himself and Somalia’s president, Hassen Sheikh Mohammed, in a skirt dress as in the Islamic traditions.

Officials from IGAD were present.

From Ethiopia, Director of the Intelligence, Redwan Hussien, and Aden Farah, Deputy Prime Minister and Vice President of the ruling Prosperity Party in Ethiopia, were  among Abiy Ahmed’s entourage.

According to a disclosure from Djibouti’s president, the meeting focused on “Peace and security in the region, the state of development of its economic integration, resolutions of shared interests for all three countries and the prevailing situation in the sub – region.”

It is also highlighted that the conflict in the middle east, particularly its economic impact to the region was discussed.

Both Djibouti and Somalia signed a cooperation agreement with Egypt last year. In the case of Djibouti, the agreement was about port development. Ethiopia relies on Djibouti for the bulk of its import and export trade. Egypt’s agreement with Somalia is a defense one.

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet remarked about this meeting.

The region is also facing what many analysts say is an inevitable conflict as Ethiopia and Eritrea are on the verge of war. Ethiopian government alleges that Eritrea is also supporting the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) to start another round of war and the two have formed a political and military alliance which is known as “Tsimdo”
