Toronto – Dessie once again experienced a landslide. It happened on Monday starting 12 a.m. local time in the Hotie sub-city,  Old Kera locality. According to an update from the city administration, 36 residential homes were damaged of which 21 are completely destroyed and 149 people are displaced.

No death or injury is reported.

Shimeles Abebaw, deputy head of Hotie sub-city administration, said the area was identified as vulnerable before the landslide after a fault line was observed. Residents were reportedly evacuated before the incident.

In the past few months, a recurring landslide has been experienced in different parts of the city. A total of 500 people are reportedly displaced, according to the update from the city administration. They are currently in makeshift camps and humanitarian assistance is being provided, the city said.

Kassim Abera, head of infrastructure development in the city, is cited as saying that humanitarian organizations are requested to respond to the situation.

He also said the residents will be permanently relocated to areas where there is no risk of landslides. However, it is not indicated as to how soon that will happen.

This year Ethiopia has experienced a deadly landslide in different parts of the country including in Tigray in North Ethiopia.  Nearly 300 people were killed as a result of the landslide.

  1. Folks! This is the time we should put our ugly politics and smelly ethnicity aside for a blessed act. We should band together and help the displaced people.

Meanwhile, we should not ignore thousands of daughters and sisters who are in grave danger caught up amid the war in the Middle East that is now spreading into Lebanon. No media outlet among our Diaspora is talking about it. I am very disappointed by the editors of these websites for not highlighting about it. Have we turned into people with hearts of stone? What is being done to evacuate or secure a safe places for people who are there as domestic workers? They have nowhere to go. Syria is a mess and danger zone itself. I don’t think Egypt will take them in and even that could a dangerous trip through the rough waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Let’s do something to help them!!!

  2. I also want to let my dear countrymen/women who now live in the projected path of Hurricane Helene know that you are in my family’s thoughts and prayers. This demon is expected to be an extremely dangerous storm and please heed the advisories and safety instructions by public officials and meteorologists. Cities like Atlanta are in the cross hairs of weakening Helene but still it is going to be destructive. Huddle up to safety my beloved countrymen/women!?!
