Toronto – Debebe Eshetu, Veteran Ethiopian Actor whose works spans several decades in the country’s history of entertainment industry, is laid to rest at the Kidist Selassie Menbere Tsebaot, Addis Abeba.
Before the funeral, a memorial service was organized at the National Theatre where he had been performing for decades. He has also served in Hager Fiker Theatre.
President Taye Atseke Selassie and other senior government officials attended the funeral.
Prominent Ethiopian actors and musicians, families and friends were also in attendance.
News of Debebe Eshetu’s passing emerged on social media on Sunday. He has been getting medical attention for many months.
Apart from acting, Debebe was a director, author and journalist. He was part of many dozens of plays , as actor, writer or director in his more than 50 years of service in the industry.
He has also acted in a prominent American film Shaft in Africa in the early 70’s.
The U.S. The Embassy in Addis Ababa expressed condolence on Debebe’s passing.
“The U.S. The Embassy sends its heartfelt condolences on the passing of Debebe Eshetu, a legendary Ethiopian actor and cultural icon whose work made a profound impact on African and international cinema…” it said.
The embassy remembered him “as an advocate of African voices in arts.”
He was 83 and is survived by his wife and four children.
