Toronto – The death toll from landslides in the Telemet area of the Amhara region in North Gondar has now 24. And the number of those wounded is reported to be 8, according to local sources.

When the disaster was reported about three days ago, only 10 people were reported killed and six others missing.

Four districts and eleven kebeles are affected by the landslide and more than 2700 residents are displaced.  About 48 houses are damaged.  Furthermore, crops on 1,775 hectares of land are also destroyed.

Government is claiming that it is coordinating emergency aid for those affected in the area.

Two other major landslides in South Ethiopia occurred in July and earlier this month killing over 270 civilians. It happened in Gamo and Wolaita zones.

The landslide is linked to heavy rainfall the country received during the months of June and July – the rainy seasons in the country.

Apart from the landside, areas in Gondar and Shoa – among others – experienced devastating flooding.

Meanwhile, parts of what is recently organized as Central Ethiopia have experienced flooding – also connected to the heavy rain that the country received.

According to VOA Amharic, two districts in Silte districts are severely affected. Over six thousand residents are displaced.  About 650 households are staying in a makeshift camp.   However, the number of displaced households is much higher.

Maregu Matheos, the region’s disaster prevention commissioner, is cited as saying that over one thousand households are displaced.

A small dam constructed for irrigation in Mareko district was reportedly filled with silt – which is identified as one of the factors for the flooding in the area.
