Toronto – Cholera outbreak is reported in Tigray, North Ethiopia. The region’s health office has reported that over 400 people were identified as Cholera patients.

11 of them have died, according to the office.

Mebrehatom Hafte, the health office’s emergency division coordinator, is cited as saying “so far 425 people have contracted the disease. 11 have died.”

He added that a Cholera outbreak has been observed in the region since July this year. Initially, it was reported in Waghmera zone, Amhara region, which shares a regional boundary with Tigray.

“We have heard the epidemic exists in Waghemra Abergele district. Samre and Selewa districts have been exchanging information. After that we have been taking samples whenever we see suspected patients,”  he said.

The outbreak was observed in Samre and Selewa districts in South East and South Tigray respectively . It was within 22 days that the outbreak was observed in the North West Zone – in Seyemti Adi Abo locality.

The region’s office says it was transmitted through movement of people as there were those who traveled to Waghumera for business or visit.

The disease was spread in the Tigray region due to the movement of people in connection with gold mining.

It is reported that the region’s health office is working in collaboration with Ethiopian Public Health Institute to reverse the outbreak.  An emergency response team is deployed to the region.

Necessary supplies have been sent to the region, it was said. Mebrehatom Hafte said shortages of water treatment supplies were resolved.

Water treatment is seen as a key prevention strategy. The coordinator says people should only consume tap water or treat the water before consuming it.

Cholera epidemic has been a recurring health challenge in different parts of Ethiopia including the Amhara region.
