Toronto – Mark Carney has been elected as the next leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, positioning him to become the country’s next Prime Minister. Carney, a seasoned economist, previously served as Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, bringing a wealth of experience to the role. There seems to be a view that he lacks political experience. Politicians like Former PM Jean Chrétien have offered to give advice, according to a CBC report.

Carney won a decisive victory, securing 86 percent of the vote in the first round, according to Canadian news sources. His closest competitor, former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, garnered only 8 percent of the vote. Freeland acknowledged Carney’s strong mandate, telling CBC, “He has a very clear mandate.”

Karina Gould, the former House leader, finished third with 3.2 percent of the vote, narrowly ahead of Frank Baylis, who received 3 percent.

In January 2025, the Liberal Party reported that 400,000 registered members signed up to vote in the leadership race, underscoring the high stakes of the contest.

The sixty years old new Liberal Party leader and PM Designated was Born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, as highlighted on the Liberal Party’s website. He is said to be a  devout catholic.

Not all political leaders view Carney’s victory as a positive development. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre seems to see Carney’s election as a Liberal election trick. He reportedly wrote on his X page :  “Liberals are trying to trick Canadians into electing them for a fourth term by replacing Trudeau with his economic adviser, Mark Carney.”

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh struck a more conciliatory tone, emphasizing the need for unity. “Canadians are counting on their political leaders to fight for them in these challenging times,” Singh said. “To stand up for a Canada where we take care of each other.”

Transition of Power

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to formally resign, paving the way for Carney to be sworn in as Prime Minister by Governor General Mary Simon.

In a meeting on Monday, Trudeau and Carney discussed ” pressing national issues”,as the latter put it when he spoke to reporters in Parliament Hill,, including Canada-U.S. relations and matters of national security. Carney later told reporters on Parliament Hill that the discussions were “long and productive,” as reported by CBC.
