Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The African Union (AU) and Somalia have approved the deployment of 2,500 Ethiopian troops to the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), a new force launched in January 2025 to combat Al-Shabaab and stabilize recovered areas. Ethiopia’s participation, initially uncertain due to Red Sea tensions with Somaliland, was secured following diplomatic efforts led by Turkey and the Ankara Declaration.

AUSSOM, with a reduced troop ceiling of under 12,626, will operate until the end of 2028, reflecting Somalia’s aim for greater control over its security operations. Uganda leads the mission with 4,500 troops, alongside contributions from Egypt, Kenya, Djibouti, and others, including police units for urban centers.

Ethiopia’s involvement occurs within a complex regional landscape. Egypt’s significant troop contribution raises geopolitical considerations given its ongoing dispute with Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, suggesting a strategic move to enhance regional influence. Somalia emphasizes the importance of respecting its sovereignty and is focused on building its own security institutions while utilizing diverse funding from international partners.
