Toronto – At least five Ethiopians killed in this week Johannesburg South Africa as Xenophobic attacks against immigrants from other African nations resurged in South Africa.
Four of the victims were killed within 48 hours. On Monday this week, three were shot inside a McDonald’s in the Johannesburg Central Business District.
The suspect reportedly walked in and shot the victims inside the restaurant. They were pronounced dead at the scene, according to South African news sources.
The victims, between 30 and 45 years of age, were having breakfast when the gunman entered the restaurant and opened a targeted fire. The names of the victims are not released.
South African Police have reportedly opened a murder investigation and are searching for the gunmen.
Two days before this incident, another Ethiopian who is identified as Tofik was reportedly killed in the same city.
On Tuesday, another Ethiopian migrant was gunned down in Johannesburg. The incident was captured in a CCTV camera which was shared on X.
BSN reported “the victim standing near a street stall when a man approaches and opens fire at close range without warning. The victim collapses instantly as the gunman calmly walks away.”
There have been recent killings since mid march this year. Wondemeneh Ayele and Abraham Yimer were killed in Johannesburg around Jeppe street. According to local Ethiopian reports which cited sources from South Africa, Wondemenh Ayele was killed with 16 bullets while Abraham Yimer was killed with three.
Wondemeneh, also known as Wonde Zebra, was a prominent business man among the Ethiopian community in South Africa. CCTV footage shows a gunman approaching him in a parking garage near his vehicle and shooting him at a close distance.
At the time of this writing, South African police did not make an arrest.
In 2018, Ethiopians were among those killed in Xenophobic attacks.
Ethiopian government response
The Ethiopian government has been criticized for poor crisis response via its diplomatic mission in South Africa. Prime Minister Abiy has not remarked about the situation as Ethiopians in the country are worrying about possible worsening of Xenophobic attacks.
The Ethiopian Embassy in Pretoria released a statement on Wednesday advising Ethiopians to document and report incidents of violence and attack. It said it will stand by Ethiopians in living in the country.
The letter from the embassy also said that it has requested the South African government to provide security protections to Ethiopians living in the country, and to investigate the recent killings.
An estimated 500,000 Ethiopians live in South Africa.

The hostility against alien residents whether they are legal or otherwise is spreading all allover the globe. Some like this one are turning deadly. For us born in Ethiopia is a double whammy misfortune. Many of us it was life threatening dangerous to live in the village or town where we were born because we were seen as land grabbing settlers by bigots and connivers who are now devout preachers. We were driven out of our birth place and had no other choice but to migrate outside the country but to end up in a deadly hostile place like this one. Steve Biko and Nelson Mandela are turning in their graves with grief. My advice to our countrymen/women in the Diaspora is stay under the radar and do everything by the legal book. You must assimilate since the majority around you are not generally hostile. That is what the early immigrants from Ireland, Italy, Poland and even Germany did.
They assimilated even though some among them were lynched by bigots. So at the end of the day we have generations who trace their ancestry back to England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Italy, Poland, Holland, you name it. I’ve had neighbors and colleagues whose ancestors were from several European countries and not to forget indigenous people. So now their original settling places exist in name only like Little Italy, Polonia and so forth. If you ask the residents in these neighborhoods about their ancestry, they will tell you that they are like 50% Polish, 25% English and 10% Irish etc, etc. Ask Robert De Niro and he will happily tell you he has Dutch, English, French, and Italian and Irish ancestry. How about one of the most accomplished actresses of our time, Meryl Streep? Her ancestry includes German, including Swiss-German, English, Irish, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, Scottish, remote French and Swedish. Remember all these countries were at war with each other butchering like mortal rival pride of lionesses for centuries along religious and ethnic lines. Who forgets the 7-yr, 30-yr and 100 yr wars also WWI, and WWII? That is unless they are some of those recent migrants. A lot of them don’t even know or care about their origin. Their most important matter in their daily chore is to go out, make a living and raise family as law abiding citizens and residents. So, if any member of the young generation among our Diaspora wants to marry outside the ethnic and religious line, don’t stand in his/her ways. Just don’t do it. Let them melt in the big legendary pot.
Peace y’all!!!
Etiopian move to South Africa for burger
The latest news is Nigeria has started evacuating its citizens from South Africa after summoning South Africa’s ambassador in Nigeria. It shows the current regime does not have the will or the capabilities to protect foreigners.
