Toronto – Ashenda holiday – which is often described in the country a girls holiday is colorfully celebrated in the Amhara and Tigray regions of Ethiopia this week.
The name is slightly different in different parts of North Ethiopia. In Tigray, where it is most colorful especially over the past two decades or so, it is known as Ashenda.
In different parts of the Amhara region, it is called Shadey in some areas and Solel in some areas. In the Amhara region, it is most common in Waghumra and Lasta.
The festival attracts hundreds of thousands of girls. They are celebrated in the open air with girls singing in groups.
In recent years, the festival is becoming a tourist attraction although the parts of the country where it is celebrated colorfully have been impacted by conflict.
Ethiopians in the diaspora are also celebrating the festival. From pictures shared on social media, the one celebrated in front of capitol Hill in Washington D.C. has attracted fairly number of people (See pic below)
