Toronto – Tigray Independence Party says that its members are being killed, kidnapped and arrested in different zones of the region.
Dejen Mezgebe, party chairman, is cited as saying that undertaking a peaceful political struggle in the region has become difficult, according to a report by DW Amharic.
The chairman is implicating what he calls “the force that is in power.” He stated that “the force that is in power is committing atrocity that is disgusting to speak about against our leaders and members. Especially in the North Western zone, claiming that ‘this is our free territory’ Tigray Independence Party can not operate here; falsely labeling our party as messenger of Prosperity[party] our members, leaders and their families are going through a tough life.”
The party is saying a peaceful political struggle has become an undertaking that would cost life.
Dejen Mezgebe added that those who recently opposed the prevalent corruption in the mining extraction sector in the region in Tigray’s North West Zone are being beaten, arrested and even killed. One member of the party was first kidnapped by gunmen and killed. 16 other members have been harassed and arrested, according to the party chairman.
There are also party members who sustained serious injuries.
The report is unspecified as to who exactly is behind the killings and harassment of members. But Dejen said the situation got worse after the TPLF conducted its party congress which was held in August this year.
He also alleges that the administration in the region is engaged in hassling opposition groups instead of resolving multi-faceted problems in the region.
“We are undertaking an absolutely peaceful struggle…we are being pushed…” Dejen added.
In a recent interview with Ethiopian Reporter, Gebru Asrat, former president of Tigray region and central committee member of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), was making a similar remark that undertaking peaceful struggle for opposition parties is still difficult, pointing fingers at the TPLF.
Gebru argued that ruling the people in the region like before by stifling voices is no longer possible for the TPLF. He accused the party of failing to learn from its past mistakes and do politics that is right for this age.
The situation in Tigray is reported to be tense as the two factions within the TPLF are intensifying their squabble over power to lead the interim administration.
