Toronto – Last Wednesday, the Amhara Association of America made copyright claims on advocacy content submitted to and published on borkena.
“Amhara Digital Diplomacy” (ADD) was accused of making copyright violations. After borkena reached out to it regarding the claim, ADD says the content submitted was within “fair use” turf.
Response from ADD is featured below :

“ Subject: Response to Concerns Regarding Citation in Diplomatic Briefing
Dear Borkena,
We are writing in response to the concern raised on August 7, 2024, by Borkena’s X account and our dear brother, Robel Alemu, on X . He mentioned that the “Diplomatic Briefing” document published by Amhara Digital Diplomacy may have included content from a report by @amharawarupdate, published by the Amhara Association of America (AAA), without proper citation.
First and foremost, we deeply value the work that @amharawarupdate and the Amhara Association of America (AAA) do to support the Amhara community. We recognize the importance of transparency and giving credit where it is due, and we appreciate the vigilance in ensuring that content is used appropriately.
Regarding the specific concern, we would like to clarify the nature of the content in our Diplomatic Briefing. The information we compiled comes from various public domain sources and widely known facts that were reported by multiple Amharic-language outlets during the time period in question. Additionally, we considered reports from civil societies, both inside and outside Ethiopia, to provide a comprehensive overview of the situation in the Amhara region.
Given that our “Diplomatic Briefing” is intended as an open letter for advocacy purposes, we relied on the “fair use” doctrine under U.S. copyright law. This allows us to use factual information without detailed citations, particularly in cases where the information is already in the public domain and widely available.
The mission of Amhara Digital Diplomacy is clear: to harness digital channels in advocating for the survival and rights of the Amhara people, and to engage in broader dialogues on digital-age diplomacy. We strive to translate and disseminate crucial narratives globally in the following languages: English, French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Russian, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Italian, Hindi, Korean, Turkish, and Persian (Farsi). These translations serve as bridges, connecting the Amhara community with the rest of the world, and helping to amplify the Amhara voice across borders.
We want to emphasize that our goal is not to undermine anyone’s efforts but to support the advocacy of the Amhara cause. We are grateful to our brothers and sisters at the Amhara Association of America (AAA) for bringing this matter to our attention, and we sincerely hope this response clarifies our intentions.
We are committed to fostering a spirit of collaboration and unity among all organizations working for the benefit of the Amhara people. Thank you once again for reaching out to us and giving us the opportunity to address this issue.
Sincerely,
August 8, 2024
