Toronto – The Kremlin on Monday disclosed that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had a telephone conversation.

It focused on cooperation between the two countries in political, trade, economic and humanitarian areas – Kremlin unveiled.

In September 2025, PM Abiy Ahmed led a delegation to Moscow and held talks with President Putin. A number of agreements were signed at the time including in the area of nuclear energy development in Ethiopia. The talk on nuclear energy between the two countries started as early as 2018, at least.

In the  phone conversation on Monday, the two leaders “reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the friendly Russia-Ethiopia relations and intensifying contacts between relevant ministries and agencies,” according to the Kremlin.

Last week, Ethiopia experienced a natural disaster in the Southern  part of the country due to heavy rain which caused flooding and landslides. 100 residents in three districts of Gamo zone were reported dead and over 64 missing.

President Putin expressed condolences over the tragedy which the Kremlin described as  ” cataclysmic landslides.”

Putin also spoke to president Taye Atseke Selassie.

He is cited as saying “Please convey words of sincere sympathy and support to the victims’ families and wishes for a speedy recovery to all those affected by this natural disaster.”

Ethiopia and Russia have over 125 years of diplomatic relations. Over the past few years, there have been recurring talks between authorities of the two countries  focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation.  Ethiopia has become a member of BRICS – and the diplomats of the two countries meet very often on the sidelines of the bloc’s events.

When Abiy Ahmed visited Moscow last year, he invited president Vladimir Putin to visit Ethiopia. It was unspecified if a visit was scheduled.  In July 2022, Russia’s top diplomat, Sergey Lavrov visited Ethiopia.  He had also visited the country after Abiy Ahmed became prime minister in 2018

  1. If PM Abiy is meeting with the killer of children, expecting mothers, the sick at home and in hospital beds along the elderly just to play from the prudent nonaligned policy book of the late Emperor, then he may barely receive a passing grade. But if he is there to scavenge at the dumpsite in Moscow just like his northern neighbor Al-Toweel Isu, then that would be tantamount to disrespecting those 130+ million upright and proud people of his country. If that country needs to build nuclear energy to supplement its current resources it would be something that deserves approval but not with Russia’s sources and backing. It must be done in cooperation with the West like the UK, France or Good Ole USA. The West is the only sure way that the byproducts of such energy generation would be securely handled and disposed. Just imagine what these bigots who have been demonizing poor farmers as land grabbing alien settlers would do if they get hold of the radioactive byproducts. Just imagine that. They will stop doing the holy rolling dancing on Sundays here among us now and they will rush back there to rain the radioactive water on those innocent poor farmers.
