A devastating air attack on the Jari shelter leaves dozens dead and wounded, displacing vulnerable survivors of prior ethnic violence once again

Borkena Desk
TORONTO, Canada — The Ethiopian Defense Force carried out five rounds of drone strikes targeting a designated Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Shelter in Jari, the Amhara region of Ethiopia.
The shelter is within a 35-kilometer distance north of Dessie town and about 5 kilometers from Hayk town.
Members of families of the victims report that the incident took place on Thursday around 11 a.m. local time. Twenty-four IDPs were killed and over 30 others wounded.
Other local sources, such as Reporter, say the number of those killed in the attack is 15, with 27 others sustaining serious injuries.
According to the source, 13 people died at the scene and two others died in the hospital. The injured were admitted to Hayk and Dessie Hospitals.
Borkena has confirmed from local sources that those killed were internally displaced persons residing at Jari Shelter Number 2. This camp was sheltering 1,700 IDPs. They were survivors of ethnic-based attacks against Amhara in the Oromia region of Ethiopia, where reports of civilian killings continue to emerge.
Images circulating on social media show that the shelters were devastated by the strike. Survivors of the attack have been displaced again. According to sources, some headed to Hayk and others to different shelters. They are reported to be in urgent need of emergency humanitarian aid.
Survivors stated that they had been asking to be relocated from the camp due to security concerns and dire food shortages, having not received food aid for several months.
The Ethiopian National Defense Force has not yet commented on the latest round of drone strikes in the Amhara region. Human rights organizations have reported recurring drone strikes targeting civilians in Amhara since the conflict between Fano forces and the federal government began in August 2023.
