Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed finalizes his administration’s executive structure with 62 new state ministerial appointments across key federal portfolios
By Staff Writer
(Nairobi, Kenya) — Following the endorsement of federal cabinet ministers earlier this week, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially appointed 62 state ministers across key federal portfolios to complete the executive structure of the newly formed administration.
The official list, released by the Office of the Prime Minister, includes notable cross-party and former regional officials. Among the appointments, Eyob Mesfin—current leader of the opposition Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice (EZEMA) party and an elected parliamentary representative in the seventh general election—was named State Minister of Urban and Infrastructure. His appointment marks the second major leadership placement for EZEMA within the executive branch, following the retention of former party leader Professor Berhanu Nega as Minister of Education.
In another high-profile appointment, former House of Federation Speaker Keriya Ibrahim was named State Minister of Women and Social Affairs. Keriya previously held administrative positions in the Tigray Region starting in 2002/2003, before resigning from her parliamentary leadership post in June 2020. She was subsequently held in federal custody during the northern conflict and later expelled from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
Additionally, Dr. Endashaw Tasew, who recently completed a three-year tenure as Chief Administrator of the Central Ethiopia Region and previously served as Federal Police Commissioner, was appointed State Minister of Peace. These latest appointments complete the secondary leadership cadre across federal executive bodies for the government’s five-year mandate.
