Ethiopian Gov’t Calls on Tigray Forces to Report to Mekelle Demobilization Center

National Rehabilitation Commission Outlines Procedures for Voluntary Surrender and Community Reintegration Amid Ongoing Security Operations

By Staff Writer

(Nairobi, Kenya) — The National Rehabilitation Commission of Ethiopia has issued an official call for members of armed groups in Tigray to report to a newly designated rehabilitation facility in the Mekelle area to participate in the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) program.

In a broadcast statement, Deputy Commissioner of the National Rehabilitation Commission, Brigadier General Derbe Mekuriaw, announced that fighters are permitted to enter the demobilization center in Mekelle to transition back to civilian life.

Brigadier General Derbe stated that numerous fighters awaiting government directives have expressed a desire for peace and are currently surrendering to Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) units deployed across various operational sectors. He noted that the federal government has allocated the necessary budgetary resources for the commission, alongside technical and financial support from international partners aimed at supporting demobilization and community reintegration efforts.

Under the outlined guidelines, combatants may report individually or in organized groups to nearby defense force posts to hand over weapons and military materiel before transferring to the demobilization site.

Addressing the fighters directly, Brigadier General Derbe urged youth who joined the armed forces—whether voluntarily or through coercion—to take advantage of the peace initiative rather than engaging in continued hostilities.

The National Rehabilitation Commission confirmed that demobilized individuals will undergo structured rehabilitation programs followed by socio-economic reintegration assistance designed to support their families and contribute to local development in the Tigray Region.
