The Ethiopian Media Authority suspends Tigray TV indefinitely and bans domestic media from using the network as an information source, citing national security violations

(Nairobi, Kenya) — The Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) announced the indefinite suspension of Tigray TV, accusing the regional broadcast network of disseminating content that threatens national security and incites public conflict.
In an official statement released in Addis Ababa, the regulatory body stated that the suspension takes effect immediately following systematic media content monitoring evaluations.
According to the EMA, the broadcast station had previously resumed operations under a negotiated framework between the federal government and the Tigray Interim Regional Administration following the November 2022 Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement. The Authority noted that it had extended institutional support and professional capacity-building workshops to assist the station’s reintegration into the national media framework.
However, recent content assessments conducted by the Authority concluded that Tigray TV repeatedly “breached” media ethics standards. The regulator alleged that the channel broadcasted materials that “undermine national interests, promote political extremism, and encourage armed confrontation.”
Alongside the broadcast suspension, the Ethiopian Media Authority issued an operational directive prohibiting all domestic broadcast, print, and digital media platforms from utilizing Tigray TV as an information source.
The Authority explicitly warned that relaying or redistributing content generated by the suspended station through unauthorized channels constitutes “a regulatory violation, cautioning media outlets that non-compliance will trigger administrative and legal sanctions.”
