Ethiopian PM advisor Getachew Reda alleges that Eritrea and Egypt are using domestic insurgent groups as proxies to wage a destabilizing campaign against Ethiopia

(Nairobi, Kenya) — Getachew Reda, Minister and Advisor to the Prime Minister on East African Affairs, accused Eritrea and Egypt of coordinating with domestic armed groups to launch a proxy war against the Ethiopian federal government.
In an interview with state-affiliated media outlet Pulse of Africa, the former Tigray Interim Regional Administration president claimed that Asmara, backed by Cairo, is actively exploiting regional friction to destabilize Ethiopia and project military influence across the Horn of Africa.
Getachew alleged that the Eritrean government deliberately avoided direct military mobilization, choosing instead to utilize domestic insurgent groups as operational proxies. He attributed Asmara’s reliance on external “surrogates” to internal demographic decline caused by mass youth emigration.
The prime minister’s advisor criticized non-state armed actors inside Ethiopia—specifically referencing the Amhara Fano, the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), and factions within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF)—accusing them of acting as operational tools for Eritrean strategic objectives.
Addressing recent political shifts, Getachew noted that former adversaries have formed tactical alignments against Addis Ababa. He specifically criticized TPLF leadership for setting aside historic grievances with Asmara, alleging that the party has ordered youth cohorts to deploy toward external conflict zones, including Sudan.
Getachew emphasized that while the federal government continues to exercise strategic restraint, potential offensive operations launched by insurgent groups along southern Tigray, North Wollo, or Afar border sectors could provoke an uncontrollable regional conflict.
He concluded his remark by calling on international partners to apply diplomatic pressure on Eritrea and regional alignment partners, warning that continued proxy engagement risks destabilizing the broader East African sub-region.
He is the first senior Ethiopian official to openly remark on the “Alliance For Survival” coalition which is presumed to be Federal government position.
