Ethiopian athlete Likina Amebaw secures a stunning victory in the women’s 5000 meters at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, claiming the ultimate title and a $150,000 prize

TORONTO, Canada — Likina Amebaw was crowned World Athletics Ultimate Champion on Sunday after a stunning victory in the women’s 5000-meter race at the Budapest Ultimate Championship, crossing the finish line in 14:30.36.
She took the lead well ahead of the final lap. Detailing the performance, World Athletics noted in a website report: “It’s become exceptionally rare in the modern era to see a major 5000m final boil down to anything but a last-lap burn-up, but at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest on Sunday (13), Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw tore up that script in superb, scintillating fashion.”
Australian athlete Jessica Hull finished second with a personal best of 14:32.39, while fellow Ethiopian athlete Fantaye Belayneh took third place in 14:32.62.
Reflecting on her win, Likina stated, “I’m very happy to become the ultimate champion… I was thinking I do not have too much of a sprint, so I was thinking halfway through the race that I’ve got to push.”
With the victory, she earned a trophy and a $150,000 cash prize. The runner-up prize is $75,000, and the third-place prize is $40,000.
Likina Amebaw is an Ethiopian athlete based in Spain. Earlier in June, she won the Rome Diamond League (Golden Gala) over the same distance.
