European Union, Partner Envoys Call for De-escalation in Northern Ethiopia and Back AU Peace Efforts

Joint Diplomatic Declaration Urges Good-Faith Dialogue, Full Pretoria Agreement

European Union Ethiopia _ Tigray Conflict

(NAIROBI, Kenya) — European Union diplomatic missions and partner Western embassies accredited to Ethiopia and the African Union issued a coordinated statement expressing grave concern over rising security and political friction in northern Ethiopia.

The joint declaration—endorsed by the diplomatic missions of 22 EU member states alongside the embassies of Canada, Norway, and the United Kingdom in Addis Ababa—urges all regional and federal actors to engage in constructive, good-faith dialogue to implement the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) fully.

The diplomatic community commended the ongoing mediation efforts led by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, the African Union’s High Representative for the Horn of Africa. Envoys characterized Obasanjo’s recent shuttle diplomacy—which involved direct discussions in both Addis Ababa and Mekelle—as a crucial initiative to prevent a return to active conflict.

Western envoys emphasized that preserving the peace architecture established under the 2022 Pretoria Accord remains essential for regional stability.

Diplomats warned that renewed military confrontation in the Tigray region would bring catastrophic consequences to local communities. The area continues to endure severe economic hardship, compounded by drought conditions and a heavy reliance on emergency humanitarian aid.

The diplomatic push follows growing international concern over reported military mobilizations and political disagreements between federal authorities and regional leadership. By issuing a unified appeal, international partners signaled that diplomatic support remains tied to peaceful resolution through the African Union framework.
