NAIROBI, Kenya— The Tigray Regional State Council has approved a record 65 billion birr budget for the 2019 Ethiopian fiscal year (2026–2027 G.C.), concluding two days of deliberations during its 6th and 7th regular sessions.
Lawmakers passed the budget proclamation with an overwhelming majority vote to fund regional development priorities, institutional reforms, and post-conflict recovery programs.
The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) reinstated the council and elected Debretsion as president of the region in May this year. The council was dissolved in accordance with the Pretoria Agreement, which ended the two-year war in November 2022. It did not have the recognition of Ethiopia’s National Electoral Board (NEBE). The TPLF action came after the federal government renewed General Tadesse Worede’s terms in office by one year in April this year.
It was feared that the TPLF action would trigger another war in the region. The United States and European Union have been attempting to convince the TPLF to avoid acts that violate the Pretoria Agreement and risk another war.

New Bureau Chiefs Sworn In
President Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael submitted two key cabinet nominations to the Council, both receiving swift approval:
- Dr. Redae Berhe – Head of the Bureau of Trade and Market Development.
- Aite Teweldeberhan Tesfaalem – Head of the Bureau of Peace and Security.
The new leadership will focus on economic revitalization and conflict prevention across the region.
The Council also endorsed performance and audit review reports for three major regional institutions:
- The Regional Higher Court.
- The Office of the Chief Auditor.
- The Tigray Mass Media Agency.
Lawmakers supported the reports’ findings, reinforcing legislative oversight over the region’s judicial, financial, and media sectors.
Judicial Appointments and Exonerations
Following detailed reviews, lawmakers confirmed appointments for new judges and a registrar to serve on the regional Higher Court. The Council also finalized membership for its standing committees and the regional Constitutional Interpretation Commission.
The Council voted by a wide majority to exonerate several judges previously facing allegations from the Disciplinary Committee. The decision clears all charges against the officials, allowing them to resume their judicial duties.

Who are those standing 2nd and 4th from left with large beer gut/belly sticking out? It shows they never missed a single meal in any day of the week with glasses/bottles of their favorite khamr. That is in the wake of the majority of those noble citizens in that region having insurmountable difficulties finding food to feed themselves and their children even once a day. That makes my blood boil in anger. But what’s new with armed gangs? Right? They are all menace to society. All current armed gangs wreaking havoc in that country are all led by individuals who are either deacons/darasaas of the demonic communism or influenced by its violent tenets. They never had brought and will never bring justice, liberty, security and the pursuit of happiness if they ever roll into town are rulers. That has not been their history. They will found their own fiefdom and that will take a miracle to dislodge them. You need proof? All you have to do is look around in that very region.
Btw, I checked the 65 billion in Birr they budgeted for the coming fiscal year and found it is about $450 million in US dollars. Where will they get that amount of money?
