Toronto – Not much was revealed to the public as the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) was in an intense internal debate over participation in the 7th General Election. This week, the secretary announced that it is resolved.
The party is part of the Coalition for Ethiopian Unity (CEU) ; it was formed by four major opposition parties in September 2025.
It had preconditions to take part in the election. Addressing irregularities in the pre-election process , an end to the conflict in the Oromia and Amhara regions, and the unconditional release of political prisoners and journalists were among the preconditions.
There was a group within EPRP that advocated for withdrawing from the election on grounds that the preconditions were met. Another group was for taking part in the election despite the conditions not met.
Mistreselassie Tamrat, secretary, revealed to the public the controversy ended with a decision from the central committee of the party. The central committee decided that it is better to take part in the election even though the conditions are not met.
The EPRP support group in the diaspora released a statement last week urging for the withdrawal on grounds that the outcome of the election is already known. It argued that it amounts to despising the people to take part in it when the result is known.

Election observers team from the AU led by Uhuru Kenyatta is in town to oversee the coming election. Let them hear your issues. They will listen.
Those in the opposition who opted to remain in the election as candidates and voters are making the right decision. There will be observers from various international organizations who assembled experts just for this mission. They will listen to any legitimate complaints and investigate any misappropriation. Please give peace a chance!!!
