Toronto – Ethiopian Cultural and Sports League of Canada announced that the organization is officially established.
It was on Saturday that the organization announced its establishment on its official face book page.
According to the news release, the mission for this organization is to connect Ethiopians Canada wide through sport and culture. It also aims to ensure the “new generation” of Ethiopian heritages in Canada are able to uphold their identity and values.
It will be organizing an annual sports festival to engage the Ethiopian community across Canada and “develop Ethiopian values,” the organization said. Work to establish soccer teams with developed technical skills and strong ethics, an area identified as part of the project for annual sports tournaments. It is currently registering clubs from across Canada.
Serving as a bridge for Ethiopians Canada wide to foster strong social bonds is another goal that it aspires to achieve.
It seems it is modelled for Ethiopian Sports Federation in North America (ESFNA) which has been serving the Ethiopian community across North America for over 42 years. This year’s tournament *42 edition) is organized in Minnesota and will take place in early July. The 33rd edition was hosted in Toronto.
Figures with notable contributions to Ethiopian sport are among those behind the establishment of Ethiopian Cultural and Sports League of Canada, it was said.
Mike Maseresha is cofounder and chairperson of the organization. He is quoted in the news release as saying “The plan is for this League to be a backbone of our community more than sports. Our children will learn about our culture while playing. For adults, it will also be a forum to meet and exchange experiences.”
