Toronto – Tesfa Mekasha one of the key figures within the Fano forces movement in the Amahra region of Ethiopia reportedly killed in a drone attack along with over thirty including civilians.  Women and elders were among the victims.

According to sources, Ethiopian government forces carried out a drone attack on December 27 around 10 p.m. local time in North Shoa, Kewet district, Rassa  locality.

The attack targeted a makeshift prison facility for the rebel forces where they reportedly kept captured government forces. Apart from civilians near the drone attack target, those captured forces were killed in the attack. However, the source unspecified the number of government forces killed.

The defense force has not remarked on this particular incident. However, there was a narrative circulating on social media that those killed were Fano forces, including Tesfa Mekasha, detained by the Fano groups.

Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) on Monday released a statement saying the government’s “digital media has been deployed because the ‘terrorist prosperity group’ has recently been worried that the Amhara is uniting.”

Fano said Tesfa Mekasha has been toiling to bring about the unity of fano forces extensively hiking across the Amhara region meeting Fano leaders – ostensibly to foster a move towards unity among the rebel groups. Currently there are two major Fano groups operating in the region, and talk has been underway to unite them.

He was in his early sixties and had  a history of service in the Ethiopian National military service during colonel Mengistu Hailemariam  government in the 1980’s.

The statement from Fano unspecified if there was a burial for those killed in the attack.

Meanwhile, Fano forces continue to make claims that they have been making military gains in different parts of the region. They explain the drone attack, as has been the case, as omens of government frustration over battle losses.
