President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi to make his first official visit, as president of Independent Somaliland and signatory of Abraham Accords, to Israel

Toronto – The State of Israel on Friday officially recognized the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state.
“Prime Minister Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Sa’ar, and the President of the Republic of Somaliland signed a joint and mutual declaration,” reads the message the Office of Prime Minister of Israel shared on its official X page.
Netanyahu was on a video call with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi , who was elected as the fifth president of Somaliland in December 2024, as he was signing the official recognition document.
” …Mr. President it is good to talk to you. Before anything else I want you to know that I am signing now as we speak Israel’s official recognition of Somaliland and its right of self-determination. Our friendship is seminal and historic. I am very very happy and I am proud of this day, and I want to wish you and the people of Somaliland the very very best,” Natenyahu said as he was speaking to Somaliland President in the video call.
Israel expressed interest in expanding partnership with the newly recognized Somaliland republic economically in the areas of agriculture and also in social development.
President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi is invited for an official working visit to Israel. It will be at the convenience of Somaliland’s President.
He remarked “It is a great moment and great historical day!” he was speaking to Natenyahu in the presence of senior members of his government.

” I accepted the invitation,” he told Netanyahu. He hopes to visit “as soon as possible.”
Somaliland has been campaigning for recognition for over 34 years after it broke away from Somaliland following the collapse of Said Barre’s government.
Somaliland had a historical grievance blaming Mogadishu over the massacre of Somalilanders in addition to the claim of distinct statehood history.
It has a very active Diaspora community that has been supporting the campaign for statehood. Despite the lack of official statehood status, Somaliland demonstrated a functioning democracy with its own currency and has been stable for decades.
It came close to getting its first recognition when Muse Behi, the forth president, signed a memorandum of understanding with Ethiopia on January 1, 2024. It was reported at the time that the recognition was in exchange for a twenty kilometers coastal land which Ethiopia intended to use for commercial and military base purposes. The development triggered tension with Somalia which sees Somaliland as its integral part.
The agreement appeared to have vanished without a trace after Turkey brokered peace between Ethiopia and Somalia in December 2024. However, there has been continued communication. President Abdirahman visited Ethiopia in October this year.
There has also been a report that Donald Trump’s administration had a tendency to recognize Somaliland as an independent state. United States diplomats and military officials have repeatedly visited Somaliland, especially after Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi became president.
Prime Minister Netenyahu mentioned during his video call that he will be sharing the news with President Donald Trump that Somaliland has signed the Abraham Accords.
Israel’s decision came days after reports of Egypt signing a deal with Djibouti and Eritrea to develop ports – a move that is understood to be a pressure against Ethiopia, as the Abu Dhabi based The National Reported. Somaliland has been opposing Egypt’s planned military presence in Somalia.

Congratulations my very dear brothers and sisters of Somaliland. I have a fond memory of Somaliland going back to the late 1960’s. I used to listen to a soothing sound of music played with a flute. Before that two of my early childhood friends were of the Isaaq clan whose parents migrated from Somaliland while it was still under the British rule.
I hope and also tend to believe that Brother H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud understands by now that 1960 will not repeat itself again and it is too late with Somaliland. Who is next? Britain? France? UAE, Qatar, Germany? Al-Toweel Isu, may be? He may have to consult el-Sisi first.
You deserve such recognition.
I can’t help it but to keep dancing to this and jumping into the skies:
Harimade Ana Haban; Ana Haban; Galada Same Nagaadhsi!!!
Harimade Ana Haban; Ana Haban; Galada Same Nagaadhsi!!!
Harimade Ana Haban; Ana Haban; Galada Same Nagaadhsi!!!
Harimade Ana Haban; Ana Haban; Galada Same Nagaadhsi!!!
I couldn’t get it out of my head. Harimade…Help!!!!
The difference between Somalia and Somaliland is irreconcilable. Somalilanders were indiscriminately murdered, by the Ziad Bare regime in Moqadishu, right after the ethio-somali war. The majority of Somalilanders are reliable, civilized and determined.
Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent nation is welcomed. The US, British, France, and Germany also need to recognize Somaliland as an independent nation. Somalilanders need military and economic support. It is crucial that somalilanders receive military and economic support with urgency.
Thank you for your frank and truthful comment, as a Djiboutian with Somaliland roots, I only hope that
PM Abiye’s government will recognize Somaliland and win a friend and an ally to fend off the turco-egyptian attempts to settle in somalia
