Somaliland Says President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi Working Visit To Ethiopia A Success

Borkena

Toronto – Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi to Ethiopia was a success, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a news release it shard on its social media page.

The president arrived in Addis Ababa on Tuesday where he was  greeted by the Minister For Foreign Affairs, Geidion Timoteos upon arrival at Bole International Airport.  His Somalia counterpart Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Addis days before his arrival. No indication if Prime Minister Abiy facilitated a discussion between the two leaders.

The Ethiopian government has released a news update why the Somaliland president was invited and what was discussed. However, Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the outcome of the president’s visit to Addis Ababa as one with “great result.”

In an update shared on social media in Somali language, the ministry stated that the visit to Ethiopia “was a great result, and at the same time carried out national goals and strategic interests between the two countries Somaliland and Ethiopia.”

It is also indicated that he had a meeting with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and with other senior government officials. The discussion focused on “strengthening diplomatic relations between the two sides, security cooperation, economic growth, facilitating the transaction of business and people, and the development of infrastructure important to the two countries.”

Somaliland and Ethiopia signed a Memorandum of Understanding on January 1,2024 in Addis Ababa which triggered a yearlong diplomatic tension between the latter and Somalia. Somalia saw it as a violation of its sovereignty on the part of Ethiopia despite Somaliland’s unrecognized statehood existence for over three decades. Recently, there have been reports that the United States might recognise  its independence.

If the agreement was ratified, Ethiopia was to get a 20 kilometers stretch of coastal land in Somaliland in exchange for unspecified share from Ethiopia’s national asset ( it was widely reported as Ethiopian Airlines). The status of the MoU is unclear as it was not officially declared as null and void.
