Toronto – The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia on Tuesday announced that it has granted Democratic Simret Tigray Political certificate of recognition.
The decision from the board was an expected one.
In a brief social media update, it stated that “By virtue of power it is granted in the proclamation, the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia has issued Democratic Simeret Tigray (Simret) with certificate of regional political party attestation on Hidar 29, 2018 (December 8, 2025)”

The party has been unable to meaningfully operate in the Tigray region of Ethiopia due to security concerns the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) allegedly posed.
The establishment of the party was announced in May this year in the capital Addis Ababa.
As well, the party’s first founding congress was in Addis Ababa which took place in late October this year.
Since its formation, the party has been mostly operating from Addis Ababa despite reports that it has opened its office in Mekelle, seat of the Tigray regional state of Ethiopia.
The party currently has 31 central committee members including Getachew Reda, leader of the party, who is also holding a Federal government position as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s adviser on East African Affairs.
Most of the central committee members did have a top level party position within the TPLF from which they parted ways following irreconcilable schism in the party which became official in August 2024. Simret accuses it, like several political parties operating in the region, of brewing another round of conflict in the region.
The TPLF has currently lost its legitimate political party status on alleged grounds of violation of the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia. Ironically, the party is in control of the Tigray region and is believed to have over 200,000 armed forces despite recent reports of mutiny. A considerable number of army units crossed to the Afar region of Ethiopia for an insurgency activity against the party – and they call themselves – Tigray Peace Force (TPS). This party is believed to have affiliation with the Simret party although the latter denied it.
Simret Party was formed with the aim to “offer alternative ways” to people in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. There has been an allegation that the TPLF dominated power and the affairs of the Tigray region, mostly by forceful means. On the other hand the TPLF sees the Simret party as an instrument of the ruling prosperity party.
