Toronto – Simret Party had formally undertook its first founding party congress this week in Addis Ababa.
The party is established in May this year by ethnic Tigray politicians who parted ways with Tigray People’s Liberation Front
“Although there was interest to undertake the party congress in Tigray, it was unsuccessful this time due to extreme anarchy in the region,” Getachew Reda remarked. Getachew Reda has been serving as President of the Region’s Interim Administration, which was part of the Pretoria Agreement arrangement.
It was required, as per legislation by government political parties which the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia oversees, to undertake its founding congress within three months after its establishment.
It did not happen for which It was given first warning.
Getachew Reda remarked that he was compelled to establish the new party because of the problem within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). It was in August 2024 that the division within the party became official.
The faction under the Debretsion Geremicael gained the upper hand with support from many of the military commanders of what was organized as “Tigray Defense Forces.”
Getachew Reda and some other elements, like Lt. General Tsadkan Gebretensae, who was supporting Getachew’s faction, had to flee Mekele for security reasons.
Getachew vows to undertake his new party’s second congress (in five years?) in Mekelle.
The ruling prosperity party representatives attended the Simret Party Founding congress. Meles Alme, top PP, attended it. He is cited as saying that “the Prosperity party will collaborate with the Simret party.” The extent and areas of collaboration are unspecified.
Political observers in the country tend to see that as an indication that the Simret party will be a Prosperity Party Clique. However, there does not seem to be a confirmation on the part of Getachew Reda whether his party will be collaborating with the ruling party.
Apart from the ruling party officials, Tsadkan Gebretensae was in attendance. “This congress is historical; it is a manifestation of a new political transition,” he remarked.
The TPLF under Debretsion Gebremichael has shifted alliance to Eritrea, an entity his party has been accusing of rights abuse, even “Genocide” during the 2020-2022 war in the region.
On the other hand, Getachew Reda and his party is, clearly, allying with the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Government whom he serves as Advisor on Horn of Africa Affairs.

Another ethnic based outfit and another dislocation. Hey Marx, Lenin and Stalin! Why did you send your deacons/darasaas with your with poison laced ‘Self Determination up to and including secession to that country of more than 80 groups of noble? Why? Now this group is telling us that the need and aspiration of those upright people in their region are fixated around their demand for black milk from a purple cow, different from the demand of the other 79 group of equally upright people. And above all this group is determined to fight for it all alone. .I was told the thesis was authored by non other than the butcher of minorities, Joseph Stalin. Stalin standing up and preaching for the rights of nation/nationalities’ right? Are you kidding me? Mind you, Stalin was the one who gobbled up more than 25 million of his own citizens including minorities just at one sitting. It is like Hitler and Mussolini writing/advocating for the rights of Serbs, other Slavic people, Roma people, Jews and Ethiopians who they billed as subhumans.
So, the poison has been spread like an addictive drug with ethnicity giving the should-know-betters there and here among our Diaspora the ultimate high. Go ahead and you count them yourself. How many Oromo ‘political groups are out there? How many Amhara groups are scheming things out there? How many different groups of other ethnic concoctions are out there? Aha! You will run out of breath just counting. This has created distrust and misconceptions about and among otherwise fraternal people. It has saddened me for decades since the 1970’s and will continue to do so as long as I come across such stories.
