The targets were mostly ethnic Amhara but Shinasha and Gumuz were also among the victims in Bulen massacre, according the reports

Borkena
Toronto – At least 50 civilians are reportedly massacred in Bulen district, Benishangul Gumuz region Ethiopia. Over 10 of the victims are reported to be women.
The incident occurred last Saturday. Sources from the area told borkena that the attack targeted ethnic identity.
The gunmen who perpetrated the attack entered the town around 5:30 a.m. local time, as government authorities confirmed.
Also, residents from the area say “Shane” gunmen are behind the attack. This is an ethnic Oromo militant nationalist group that calls itself.
As was the case in the past, it did not officially admit that it was behind the attack.
The number of deaths from this attack is expected to rise as there are those wounded and admitted to hospital in a life threatening condition.
Initially the number of those killed and whose bodies were found at the scene were 40, according to sources.
Shibeshi Bareda, deputy head of Bulen district administration, on Sunday has confirmed the killing when he expressed “deep condolences” for those killed in Bakuje Kebele by what he described as “extremist gunmen.”
He described it as cruel, but did not give any numbers on it nor he did call the attackers by their names.
There had been recurring attacks mostly targeting ethnic Amhara in a pattern that seems to suggest ethnic cleansing since Abiy Ahmed came to power.
About five years ago, 200 ethnic Amharas were massacred in Bulen district. In 2021, Ethiopian Human Rights Council reported over 500 civilians were killed in the region and over 100,000 displaced (read the story here).
Members of the Coalition for Ethiopian Unity, an opposition party coalition, released a joint statement of condolences and condemned the attack.
They confirmed that the attack was mostly targeting ethnic Amhara while indicating that members of ethnic Gumuz and Shinasha were also killed.
Also, they pointed out that government security forces were not in the area despite a serious security threat. Residents attempted to protect themselves.
However, the attackers were reportedly well organized and armed with firearms like DShk and Bren machine guns.
Ethnic Amharas in the Oromia and Benishangul Gumuz regions have been targets of organized attacks over the past seven years.
