Toronto – Ethiopian Health Professionals are reportedly planning to resume strike. They allege that the government has not addressed their demands for which they had been striking for months.
They say they are now ready for a second round of strike as the government has failed to respond to the 12 demands they had been pushing for including a livable salary amid spiraling cost of living.
Organizers of the movement announced that they have given a one month time for the government to address all their concerns or they will start the strike again.
They expect the government to address them across the country. Three of the questions are presented as most crucial. One of them is the implementation of the new salary scale across regions and health centers. They also demand a special salary adjustment for health professionals.
The other key question is adjustment for extra duty pay as part of the new public service salary increment adjustment. Those who are paid with the old pay structure should be compensated for unpaid extra duty pay , they demand.
Third priority demand is regarding benefits. Housing, vulnerability and other benefits are demanded to be paid out immediately. They point out their situation has been similar for over thirty years.
Organizers have expressed the feeling that there is negligence on the part of the government in terms of putting in place a system that is considerate of health professionals’ conditions.
“The government will be responsible for consequences if it fails to address the demands within one month and a strike starts again,” they say.
Despite prioritizing the three demands, health professionals insist that all the 12 demands need to be addressed over the course of time.
The Ministry of Health has not remarked on the latest development.
Health Professionals had been on a strike in the months of May and June this year. They returned to work following negotiation with the government. Several months later, it appears that their demands are not addressed.
