Toronto – Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) disclosed that it had its 11th central committee members meeting. It discussed the situation in the country.
Its evaluation is that Ethiopia is in a dangerous situation and its conflicts in different parts of the country need a peaceful resolution.
However, it tends to think that the ruling party is not doing that. Rather, the party said that the Prosperity Party is “exploiting war as a means to maintain a hold in power.”
It said “United Power of the People always surpasses” the power of any dictatorship, and that people will inevitably get organized to defend their rights.
EPRP vowed that it will intensify its work to mobilize and organize the public to stand in unity to defend its rights.
It called on the government to resort to negotiation with armed groups in the country rather than demanding their surrender.
As well, it called for an end to targeting civilians in conflicts, “stop addressing political demands with forceful action”, and “starting war here and there.” According to credible reports from multiple sources thousands of civilians have been killed in the Amhara region of Ethiopia over the past two and half years. Similar situations have been reported in the Oromia region as well.
The immediate release of activists, politicians, opposition party figures, journalists and human rights advocates who are arrested illegally, is another key issue that EPRP demanded of the government in its press statement.
Also, it called on the International Human Rights Organizations and state actors with friendly relations with Ethiopia to stand on the side of Ethiopia and express solidarity.
EPRP emphasized that Ethiopia is in a dangerous situation and the ruling prosperity party should pursue peaceful solutions if it claims to have “conscience.”
“…Our party pledges to the Ethiopian people that more than ever will intensify its struggle for the freedom, equality and justice in Ethiopia,” EPRP said.
The party made a reference to resurging strike from health professionals, protest from teachers and other sections of the population as omens of “thunder before the rain.” It said repressive response to the demands in Afar, Sidama, South Ethiopia, South and South West Ethiopia, and Somali will worsen it rather than lead to solutions.
EPRP has been vocally critiquing the ruling party on issues ranging from pervasive conflict to growing repression of political rights, from human rights violations to an illegal crackdown on press freedom and opposition politicians among other issues.
It is one of the core opposition parties that formed the Coalition for Ethiopian Unity – a coalition of six opposition parties.
