Toronto – As the news of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) inauguration dominated news outlets in the country two days before the Ethiopian New year, Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Party (EPRP) dared to bring the sufferings of political prisoners to a limelight.
The party released a statement on its social media page, on Wednesday, calling for the “unconditional release of political prisoners” detained at Qlinto prison facility in the outskirts of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa .
EPRP also expressed strong solidarity to political prisoners and those arrested because of their identity. As has been reported before, there is a belief among some opposition parties and activists that many of the activists and politicians arrested over the past two years are arrested because of their ethnic identity.
The demand is addressed to the Ethiopian government. However, the party also emphasized members of the diplomatic community and human rights defenders are expected to work on ending arbitrary and unjust arrest in Ethiopia.
The party also called for the Ethiopian people to support the families of the political prisoners.
Mistreselassie Tamerat, Secretary of the party, and her colleagues visited the political prisoners in Qlinto on Tuesday before the party released a statement on its social media pages.
They visited Yohannes Buayalew, Christian Tadele, Tewodros Hailemariam (Dr.), Wondwossen Assefa (Dr.), Merigeta Belay Adamu, Chanie Kebede (Dr.). Journalist Gobeze Sisay and Journalist Dawit Begashaw, among others.
Some of the prisoners like Christian Tadele have been suffering from medical conditions with multiple surgeries.
Abiy Ahmed and his party officials pledged to broaden the political space and press freedom when taking power in 2018. Over the past two years, patterns of politically motivated arrest and crackdown on press freedom persisted in the country.
