Toronto – Ethiopia’s Ombudsman on Thursday shared a press release highlighting results from investigation and follow up work in the first quarter of Ethiopian Year.

As many as 430 complaints of administrative abuses were reported in the first three months.  350 of them were on government organizations and over 70 were on private ones.

The number from private organizations is smaller because  many victims of administrative abuses in the private sector do not file complaints at the Ombudsman, according to released on social media page.

“83 percent of administrative complaints were on government organizations,” it was reported. The remaining is on private organizations.

It said it has sued 50 officials over “failing to respond to allegations of administrative” abuses. It has also disclosed that some of the offenders were found to be guilty.

Deneke Shanko, executive of the Ombudsman, is cited as saying 40 government institution officials were charged in the last Ethiopian year. A decision was passed on 22 of them while the remaining 18 cases were transferred to this year.

Many of the cases are related to land possession and ownership, employees benefits and salary payment.

In the first quarter of this Ethiopian year, 13  cases were charged and ruling has been given on four of them.

Some of the officials were suspended as heads of the institutions. Others were fined. And still other institutions were made to pay compensations for the victims of administrative abuse.

Municipality office of Burisa in Sidama regional state, West  Guraghe zone, Durame City administration in Kembata, Bullen District in Benishangul Gumuz region, and six government offices in Amhara and Tigray regions of Ethiopia.

In Addis Ababa, Yeka, Gulele, Kaliti and Lideta Subsites were facing similar charges.

Last year, the Ombudsman revealed service gaps in the public sector.
