Toronto – Former President of Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Council Tekedami Hadj Mufti Umar reportedly passed away. He passed away today.
It was only earlier this week that news of his admittance to hospital in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa was reported.
Today, social media sources close to the family, like Ustaz Abubakr Ahmed who is a notable Islamic religious leader and activist , shared news of Hadj Mufti’s passing.
The news has been trending on social media among Ethiopians over the past an hour and half.
Hadj Mufti has served as president of the Supreme Islamic Council of Ethiopia for about three years.
The circumstance under which he was made to leave the position rather seems to be blurry as many in the Islamic faith had anticipation that he would continue. What was clear was that there had been what appeared to be ethnic nationalism motivated pressure with the goal to replace him with another Islamic leader.
He had a respectful and cordial relation with Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo church and other religious leaders.
Undoubtedly, he will be remembered for his pacifist stance and his teachings that emphasize loving human beings irrespective of ethnic identity and religious conviction.
He had been popular among millions of Ethiopian Christians well.
Details about funeral arrangement, including location, are undisclosed. Haji Mufti is from Wollo, North central Ethiopia.
There is anticipation that he will get a state funeral.
Borkena is deeply saddened with the news and would like to convey heartfelt condolences to Ethiopians.
